Frequently Asked Questions
How do I log a brew? ⌄
Tap the + tab at the bottom of the screen. Only the bean name is required — everything else is optional.
The form has three collapsible sections to keep things simple. Tap any section header to expand it:
- Bean & Grind Details — roaster, origin, grind size
- Recipe Details — water temp, brew time, yield
- Tasting Notes — photo, flavours, acidity, notes
Tap Save Brew when you're done. Your brew appears at the top of the My Brews tab.
How do I edit or delete a brew? ⌄
Tap any brew card to open the detail view, then tap Edit in the top-right corner.
To delete, tap Delete on the detail screen, or long-press a brew card on the home screen and choose Delete from the menu.
What are Saved Recipes? ⌄
Recipes let you save your favourite brew settings (method, dose, water, grind, temp) so you can reuse them without re-entering everything each time.
While logging a brew, expand the Recipe Details section and tap Save as Recipe. Give it a name and it's saved.
Next time you log a brew, tap Load a saved recipe at the top of the form to pre-fill those fields.
Free accounts can save up to 3 recipes. Pro is unlimited.
How does the Brew Timer work? ⌄
Open the Timer tab, select your brew method, and tap Start. The timer walks you through each phase with on-screen instructions and haptic feedback at every phase change.
Free methods: V60, French Press
Pro methods: AeroPress, Espresso, Chemex, Moka Pot, Cold Brew, Pour Over
When the timer finishes, tap Log This Brew to jump straight to the log form with your method pre-selected.
How does Bean Bag Tracker work? ⌄
Bean Bag Tracker is a Pro feature. Access it from the 🫘 button on the My Brews screen.
Add a bag with its roast date and size. Brew Journal automatically tracks its freshness:
- Fresh — days 0–7, still degassing
- Peak — days 7–28, optimal flavour window
- Past Peak — days 28–60, use soon or for cold brew
- Stale — over 60 days
Link a bag when logging a brew to automatically deduct the dose from remaining weight. Enable bag alerts in Settings to receive notifications when a bag hits peak or goes stale.
What is Dial-In Mode? ⌄
Dial-In Mode is a Pro feature. It lets you compare multiple brew attempts side by side to find your perfect recipe.
Create a session, add attempts with different variables (grind size, dose, ratio), and mark the winner. Useful when dialling in a new bag of beans or a new grinder.
How do I see my stats? ⌄
Tap the 📊 button on the My Brews screen. Free accounts see total brews, average rating, and favourite method.
Pro unlocks the full dashboard: streak tracking, annual goal progress, coffee spending breakdown, top-rated beans, and method breakdown chart.
Set your annual brew goal in Settings → Brew Goal. A progress ring appears on the home screen once it's set.
How do I export my brew log? ⌄
CSV export is a Pro feature. Go to Settings → Export → Export Brew Log as CSV. The file can be opened in Excel, Numbers, or Google Sheets.
You can also share individual brews as a formatted text card — open any brew and tap the Share button.
How do I enable dark mode? ⌄
Dark theme is a Pro feature. Go to Settings → Appearance → Theme and choose Dark or System (follows your iPhone's system setting).
How do I restore my Pro purchase? ⌄
If you've reinstalled the app or switched devices, open the Pro Upgrade screen (tap Unlock Pro in Settings) and tap Restore Purchase at the bottom. Make sure you're signed into the same Apple ID used for the original purchase.
Brew Journal Pro is a one-time purchase — you'll never be charged again.
How do I clear all my data? ⌄
Go to Settings → Data → Clear All Data. This permanently deletes all brews, orders, bean bags, recipes, and settings. This action cannot be undone.
Note: your Pro purchase is stored with Apple and can always be restored — it is not affected by clearing app data.
Is my data backed up or synced? ⌄
Brew Journal stores all data locally on your device — no account is required and no data is sent to external servers. This means your data is private by default.
Your data is included in your iPhone's standard iCloud or iTunes backup, so it will be restored when you set up a new device from a backup.
If you want to keep an independent copy, use the CSV export feature (Pro) to save your brew log to Files.
Privacy
Brew Journal collects no personal data. There is no account, no login, no analytics, and no advertising. Everything you log stays on your device. The app does not connect to any server except Apple's App Store for the in-app purchase.
The only system permissions the app requests are:
- Photo Library — to attach photos to your brew logs (only when you tap Add Photo)
- Notifications — for optional brew streak reminders and bean bag peak window alerts
